Grass, grass and more grass! (Group1-Yu Pei-Xin Yu)

The sun came out today!:D
It's hot and cold at the same time but it's very comfortable.
We ate vegetarian sausage for breakfast and Ferozia ate it with JAM!

Hehe:) and we set off in our wellies again! whee!
At the woodland, we learnt about about all the different plants during summer in UK.
We measured the temperature and pH of the soil, the wind speed, the light intensity and the other microclimatic factors, using the equipment provided at the 2 coupes, the 1998 and 2008 ones respectively.

We went to two different coupes in different parts of the forest separated by a forest trail, the 1998 one and the 2008 one respectively. We first measured the temperature at ground level using the thermometer. Next, we measured the light intensity using the LUX meter. Later we went on the measure the the soil compaction using the penetrometer. We measured the humidity using hygrometer. Following that we went to measure the speed of wind in the air using the anemometer. We tabulated the results carefully using the sheet of paper provided.

It was a very interesting experience and it helped us to understand more about forest studies, particularly the factors affecting the growth of plants on the ground layer. We also enjoyed the demonstration from Ms Rachael. After which, we used the data sheet to record our findings. we also collected some soil samples for further investigation later on in the mill.
For lunch, we had a picnic there in the shade:) As usual we had our packed lunches that we prepared ourselves during breakfast. It was very cooling under the big tree and we had team bonding session! Sarah's bag attracted a lot of attention from bugs and insects=.=
After lunch, we learnt to identitfy the different species of plants on the ground layer. There were some very pretty flowers such as the bluebells and the forget me nots:) However, there were also some scary plants like the stinging nettles and the thistles:(
We had fun selecting random plots of land for our quadrant and we successfully identified the various plants and their percentage frequency. It was enjoyable as we now know the characteristics of the different species of plants.

We recorded our findings on the data sheet provided respectively for the 1998 and 2008 coupes.
It was a valuable experience to be able to conduct such experiments in the wild and learn through fieldwork and hands on experience, something that is rare in Singapore:)
