Reflections of the day [Eugenia, Samyata, Felina, Rachel, Ferozia]

Today we had coastal studies at Walton on the Naze where we learnt about percolation rates, long shore drift, cliff grading, as well as many other new and unfamiliar things. It was an interesting experience for us to be at the beach and not perspiring despite the bright sun. To our surprise, we were feeling really cold as the wind kept blowing at us as we carried out our experiments and such.

We learnt how to use a theodolite which allowed us to measure the distance between the ground and line of sight to investigate the beach profile there. We also saw the difference between the managed and unmanaged sides of the beach where we could assess percolation rates and also the sediment size.

When carrying out our different experiments at the unmanaged side of the beach, we had to make sure that we did things quickly as there was going to be high tide in a short while, and the area we were at was going to be completely filled with water. Despite the freezing cold conditions we were put to work in, we managed to get our results and move on to the managed side of the beach to complete our tests. After so we had lunch somewhere facing the shore and we were allowed to make sandcastles for about 10 minutes, then go for some quick shopping where we had the opportunity to try some fresh fish and chips.

It was a great experience at the beach and we would love to go back again any time.
